My Brikka Arrived!

My pot arrived today.  Well, the postman rang twice (once?) yesterday but no one was home, so I picked it up today.  Film at 11, but it is a cute little unit!  I had to run it at 3/4 capacity 3 times to "break it in", so I used whatever beans I had lying around, which were not espresso/Italian roast.  It DOES produce crema, and the flavour is pretty good for break-in period and ordinary beans.  I think I lucked out setting the grinder burrs correctly.

I took some digi shots ... I'll post them on Flickr and post a link here once they're up.

Great Blog WeeDram!:

Awesome.....I can't wait to finally be able to purchase my 2 cupper!  So is it really enough for two people??  Also, is that Turkish grinder the one you use with your Brikka?  If so, does it do a good job?

Turkish Grinder:
goodstuff:  Thanks for the compliment!  I would say "2-cup" is a bit optimistic; think of it as a double shot.

Yes, I use the Turkish grinder for the Brikka.  It works really well, but I have limited experience
with burr grinders.  Naturally, it's not as fast as an electric grinder.  I use just under two standard
scoops to load the Brikka filter.  Cranking by hand takes me a couple of minutes, so that is a PITA.
OTOH, since hand cranking is slow speed, the burrs don't heat up and cause heat damage to the grind.

Note that there are two basic kinds of Turkish mills.  One type is not adjustable for the grind and is
intended for grinding for Turkish coffee, which is too fine for an espresso machine, much less the Brikka.
The other implementation has an adjusting screw in the bottom of the unit.  I bought the first kind, but took
it back and exchanged it when I discovered it really wouldn't work for me.

To make the adjustment for grind fineness, I tightened up the adjusting screw all the way and then backed
it off 1/4 of a turn. It was a total guess on my part, and I think it may be a shade too fine, but it's not far
off. Dumb luck. When I get some time, I'll take some shots of the internals of the grinder and post those
along with notes on experimenting with different settings.

Nice discussion: Turkish grinder and Brikka...cool topic! It would be great if you can copy and paste the post above as an independent article to start a new topic so that it will be more visible to other people. Thanks!
