Experiments

Hello everyone!
I bought a 2-cup Brikka a couple of months ago and love it!
This site was a major contributing factor in the purchase, so I owe all of you many thanks.

Not too long after I started brewing with my Brikka pot I started wondering about the possiblities of it and tried out my first experiment tonight. I tried to make a coffee flavored liquor, i.e. using booze I have around the house instead of water. My first round was with bourbon using the same amount of bourbon as I would water and the same amount of espresso grinds. The results were less than ideal. The coffee was horribly burnt and the flavors in the bourbon were very exaggerated.

Next, I thought that a clear liquor such as vodka may work better, but not having any vodka on hand I chose a personal favorite, gin. Bad idea! Hahaha! I used half the amount of grinds and the coffee was still burnt to a crisp and the flavors in the gin were so pronounced it was undrinkable!

I'm determined that this will work, and so here is my plan: 1) alcohol boils at a much lower temperature than water, but does not build up the same pressure at boiling point and cannot lift the pressure valve leading to prolonged contact with the grinds and burning. So, the valve comes off next time. 2.) Use vodka. It is a relatively flavorless liquor and shouldn't interfere with that great coffee flavor that we all love so much.

I would love to hear from any Brikka lovers who have tried or will try similar experiments. Of course, only from Brikka lovers of legal age to consume alcohol :).

Wow!: Wow, Saubrey. What a brave experiment. I am not much of a hard-liquor drinker anymore, but I am curious...I actually wondered if anybody tried with moka pot in general and Googled "moka pot liquor"...and guess what, this page appeared on the top page. So you are one of the pioneers...may be ;)

Brikka boilover:

Just got a new Brikka yesterday.  The valve top was loose and it took me a while to figure out that I had to screw it to the lower part the goes up and down the central stem.

But I just don't have it right...  It keeps spewing the coffee all over everything...  Any suggestions, ideas, direction, corrections, etc???

Appreciate whatever help anyone can provide.

screw it real tight:

>>>> Brikka boilover: <<<<<

maybe you haven't screwed the upper bowl tight enough to the water tank. i mean it's gotta be REAL tight.

and of course, check that the gasket is not broken.

Brikka Boilover:

Thanks for the advice on the boilover.  The coffee is coming out from under the TOP.  It looks like the force of the coffee from under the top valve is too strong and literally shoots it out underneath the hinged top.  Am I missing something in the assembly?  I had to screw the top of the valve to the bottom after it arrived.

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

Alcoholic drinks..: This is just nuts.. You shouldn't heat any kind of liquor, especially not to boiling point and produce alcohol-"steam" followed by water steam..  :)

However, all is not lost because your Brikka should be able to make a mean Irish Coffee... Google for recipes, and the Brikka will ensure you get the coffee part right.
